7/14/2008    Products can contribute to building sustainability

Mestek, Inc is a member of the US Green Building Council and as such take our contribution to building sustainability seriously both in our manufacturing process and in the products that we produce.  Our continuous improvement initiative reflects our commitment both sustainability and lessened environmental impact on both levels.

As it relates to our products, we have recently introduced products that are both energy and environmentally friendly.  Our new “mini” Fire/Smoke and Smoke damper line is an example of engineering products that consume less energy, yet utilize recycled material in our manufacturing process.  The dampers are designed to operate at a greatly reduced static pressure loss when compared to traditional single thickness or airfoil blade Fire/Smoke or Smoke dampers.  The pressure loss across the damper can be 30 to 40 percent less than previous generation dampers depending on size and duct velocity.  For a damper that is 12 “ x 12” operating at 2000 feet per minute, and assuming $.10/KWH, the annual energy savings for a single damper is $ 122.75.  The effect of this is even more dramatic when the 30 year expected life of the building is considered, with a total savings of $3602.75 per damper.  Additionally, our “mini” series is manufactured using steel that has at least 40% recycled content.

Increased ventilation rates are another area that draw increased attention as designers strive to obtain both increased occupant comfort and reduced energy consumption.  We have introduced a redesigned “HP” (High Performance) line of extruded aluminum outside air louvers that operate at up to 20% lower pressure drops compared to standard products.  By increasing free area without sacrificing water penetration performance, we offer the designer the ability to increase ventilation rates while reducing fan horsepower required.

Another area we are concentrating on is reducing the total volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) that our paint contributes to the building environment.  Voc’s are introduced by any painted product in the HVAC/R system and can result in reduced occupant comfort and the resultant worker productivity decline.  We have introduced a new paint system in our facilities that use a two coat paint that contributes 50% fewer VOC’s to the environment that traditional water based enamels.  Further, the paint requires no special disposal, further reducing the environmental impact of our manufacturing operations.

These are but a few examples of the initiatives we are implementing as part of our overall “Green” initiative.  We are proud to be the industry leader in creating a sustainable environment.  For further information please visit our websites, www.airbalance.com.

5/7/2008    Introducing the Fresh Air Package (FAP)

The FAP is a new packed DOAS (Dedicated Outdoor Air System) from Applied Air.  This unit is the product of over 6 years of research and design and was designed from the ground up to fully comply with the ventilation standards set forth in ASHRAE 62.1.  Compliance with this standard is a prerequisite for LEED certification.   The FAP is a modular unit that contains many features that historically were only available in custom units.  These features include:

  • Our exclusive DHTD™ (Digital High Turn Down) burner (Patent Pending) with turn-down ratios up to 100 to 1.  The most energy efficient indirect fired burner available.
  • Powerful plenum fan section that can produce up to 6"wg of static pressure.  Long duct runs are no problem for the FAP.
  • MERV 7 filters standard with MERV 15 filters available for providing fresh clean ventilation air to your building.
  • Up to 6 rows of DX coil.  These coils are essential to insure that the air you bring in to your building is cool and dry.
  • Patented ApdaptAire™ DDC controls that are BACnet, LON, N2, and modbus compatible
  • Up to 60 tons of DX cooling capacity utilizing the environmentally friendly 410A refrigerant.
  • Available re-heat coil option enables neutral air while complying with ASHRAE 90.1.
To find out more about how the FAP can benefit you and your projects visit our website at www.appliedair.com or  contact your local applied air representative.

4/15/2008    Mestek and Green

Mestek and Green

We are pleased to announce that Mestek has joined the US Green Building Council.  As a subsidiary of Mestek, Louvers and Dampers is committed to sustainability in our manufacturing processes.

“We are continuing to minimize the negative impact our manufacturing facilities and products have on the environment, as well as maximize the use of recycled material content of our products and packaging,” said Mike Binkholder, Vice President of Sales and Marketing.

Today fully 30% of the material content of the steel and up to 50% of the material content of the aluminum extrusion we purchase is recycled material.  Additionally, most of our corrugated containers have at least 50% recycled content, and suppliers located within a 500 mile radius of our Florence, KY facility are given preference as part of our ongoing effort to reduce our carbon footprint.

To Mestek, going green means more than utilizing recycled raw materials and recycling byproducts of our manufacturing process.

“For years L&D has lead the industry in introducing more energy efficient products,” said Binkholder.

Our line of “Mini” fire/smoke dampers has the lowest pressure drop in the industry.  The MR, “mini” fire/smoke damper, has blades in the airstream, which contributes to greater efficiency of the HVAC/R system and thus reduces energy consumption in high performance buildings.  Low leakage control dampers were pioneered by L&D to reduce conditioned air from escaping the building envelope, further reducing energy consumption.

“New product development is underway to provide more energy efficient products as well as innovative applications of our louver products to reduce heat load on east and west exposures,” said Binkholder

We are proud to be a part of the US Green Building Council, and would welcome the opportunity to discuss with you how our products can contribute to your buildings energy efficiency.  We are committed to helping our customer’s reach “Net Zero” energy usage by the year 2030!

3/12/2008    New Futera Fusion Boilers Are IBR Rated And Up To 97.5% Efficient

WESTFIELD, Mass. October 30, 2006 -- RBI has introduced the next generation of high efficiency commercial boilers and hot water heaters with the Futera Fusion™, a boiler that is IBR-listed and up to 97.5% efficient. The new boiler is designed to meet the changing demands of environmentally sensitive or green building design.
The gas fired condensing boiler with full modulation and a 3:1 turndown, is available in sizes from 500 to 2000 MBH. The Futera Fusion features advanced heat exchanger technology with solid bronze headers, a gasket-less heat exchanger and finned copper or cupronickel tubing for superb heat transfer. A metal-fiber burner allows seamless modulating turndown, ultra-low emission levels and whisper-quiet operation. In addition, the system automatically adjusts energy input to precisely match the heating load without over-firing or wasting fuel. In addition every model has a minimum full input efficiency rating of 94.5% with certain sizes achieving a rating of 97.5%. At minimum inputs, each model is capable of producing efficiencies as high as 99%.
A secondary solid stainless steel heat exchanger with condensate trap operates at the boiler’s full-flow rate and allows operation in condensing mode at all times. A state-of-the-art temperature mixing system protects the system’s primary heat exchanger.
The Futera Fusion is available as a fully packaged unit, including integral boiler pump, near boiler piping, low temperature mixing value and secondary heat exchanger. In addition, the new boiler comes with a full, 21 year, non-prorated warranty against damage from thermal shock. Its compact footprint of just 29-inches wide enables the unit to fit though standard doors, and its low maintenance design makes the boiler ideal for commercial, institutional and industrial applications.
